A Management graduate and an Artist, Dorothy Ghosh did not think twice before leaving behind a successful and lucrative career to start this NGO with her mother, Kalyani Ghosh. It did not matter to her that she was leaving behind more than a decade in business, design and management. Dorothy Ghosh is the workhorse of Kalyani Animal Welfare Foundation, providing basic needs for stray, abandoned, old, diseased and other destitute animals. For her, every animal at Kalyani Animal Welfare Foundation is like her child. Dorothy, almost single-handedly, not only provides care for these animals, but works tirelessly to generate awareness on the need for animal welfare, raise funds and supervise all aspects of administration so that the shelter may run without a glitch.

1.  Tell us something about you and your Boarding experiences with dogs?

I am Dorothy Ghosh and I am a founder of Kalyani Animal Welfare Foundation, a NGO who works for dogs. I am a graduate as well as an artist who has a decade of experience in Business, design and management. I could have enjoyed a lucrative and successful career but I gave it up because I wanted to work for animals with my mother Late Mrs. Kalyani Ghosh. Today, I am still carrying on the same legacy to look after strays as well as abandoned dogs.

2.  What motivated you to start a dog boarding service?

I am known as a workhorse at Kalyani Foundation and I try my best to provide basic needs for stray, abandoned, old, diseased and other destitute animals. During my years of experience, I have come to know that many people abandoned their dogs because they can’t look after them due to various reasons. As more and more people are getting pets especially dogs there could be a rise in population of dogs living on the streets. As a result, I started a boarding service for dogs in delhi where people can leave their dogs when they go outstation.

3.  What are the challenges faced in dog boarding?

The biggest challenge faced in a boarding service is trying to keep dogs happy. Dogs who have come to our boarding experience are low on energy as it is the first time they are staying away from their family. Many of them don’t eat or drink properly so it is a challenge to look after them in the best possible way. All our staff is highly trained to handle such dogs and in the end the dog starts to enjoy their stay with us.

4.  How has customer feedback motivated you in your dog boarding work?

Our customers love their pets as family members and at times they leave them with us if their whole family is going on a vacation for a few days or if there is an important function at their house like marriage. They also want to ensure that their pet receives the best treatment and quality food during the stay and that is a reason why people ask us to feed them with products like Pedigree, Drools, Royal Canin etc. Many have also asked us if they could see their pets through video calling and we are trying to set it up so that our customers can see what their dog is doing.

  1. 5.  Do you have any advice for new/aspiring pet parents regarding boarding for dogs?

Before choosing a boarding for your dog, you should personally visit the place and inspect it so that you can find out if it comes through on your expectation. Before putting your pet in boarding, get a trial check so that your dog gets familiar with staying at boarding and if the experience is favourable then you can leave him for a number of days.

  1. 6.  Have you noticed any change in the mindset of pet parents regarding boarding for dogs over the   years?

Early people used to be wary about how their pet will be treated if they opt for boarding but today the scenario has changed. Most people are opting for boarding for several reasons because they know that their pet will get good quality food, water and regular exercise which will help them to remain active. Today, people are ready to spend on their pet if the boarding place is ready to provide them the service that they need.

  1. 7.  Any tips that you would like to give to pet parents regarding boarding for dogs?

A boarding will be a second home for your dog so you should choose it wisely. You can also choose a boarding based on years of experience. Also ask for a trial stay for your pet so that you come to know how your dog will react to it.

  1. 8.  What are the common mistakes that are done by pet parents with regards to choosing to board     for their dogs?

Most dog owners give in to the sweet talks of people at dog boarding but you should understand that your pet will enjoy a good stay only if they can take good care of them. This would include feeding them with quality food and a good place to live. Again, most owners should undertake surprise visits to ensure that the boarding people are providing the facilities which they promised.
